2025 KITFO Film Festival

This year, the Habesha Film Association (HFA) was a major community partner for the Kitfo Film Festival for the second consecutive year, playing an integral part in the event's success. As the official judging committee, HFA meticulously reviewed film submissions and selected the award winners across multiple categories. Their influence was also felt in promoting the festival to their wide network, with HFA serving as hosts for the awards ceremonies that celebrated the cinematic achievements of Ethiopian and Eritrean filmmakers.

The festival's top honors went to several outstanding films. Christopher Chambers's A Fire Within, a powerful documentary about three Ethiopian women who bring their torturer to justice in the US, won Best Documentary Feature. The award for Best Narrative Feature was given to Abel Regasa for his moving drama Megnot (Two Hearts), while Best Documentary Short went to Laura Checkoway's The Cat Man Eshete, which tells the story of an Ethiopian refugee caring for a cat colony in Brooklyn. Other winning films included Michael Metaferia's The Perfect Ball for Best Narrative Short and Saaret E. Yoseph's JOURNEY(S): Addis to DC for Best Experimental Short, the latter a docupoem that honors the experiences of Ethiopian women in the diaspora.
